Dawn Redwoods were thought to be totally extinct until they were discovered at a temple in China in early 20th century. These trees have beautiful feather-like foliage and a formal, upright style which is visually powerful and majestic.
Yes it came packed very nicely like the other reviews say, it even got here earlier than I expected.
What I was upset about is really how ugly this tree is. I wasn’t expecting something as perfectly manicured as what is shown in the picture but I definitely wasn’t expecting the Hackjob that arrived on my doorstep. It looked like it someone had just lopped off about a foot in order for it to fit in the box… I just got it an hour ago and I’m seriously debating returning it because I don’t know if I have it in my to make this look like anything other than a diseased, half-dead stick with some leaves glued on.
The trunk is very straight which is nice, and even with the free shipping it still arrived with moist soil. The pot is also very nice. The reason for a 2 star instead of a 1 or less.
The base of the tree was thicker than the one shown in the picture. The I received has a nice taper. A nice touch, there was a little bit of moss growing over the dirt.
The tree came packaged in a tall box with an inner Styrofoam base to protect the pot. The pot and base of the tree were wrapped tight in a thick plastic and the soil was damp upon arrival. The rest of the space inside the box was filled with a biodegradable type of foam peanuts (watch out, they get everywhere when you take the tree out).
Picture a straight stick, lopped off at the top, with a few bare branches a few tiny bits of green, and you have this “bonsai” plant. Very well packed, but pathetic when unpacked, the only resemblance to the photos on the Amazon page would be the pot, which is identical. We received this as sympathy gift after death in family. Hard to imagine a more absurd item. Noted this to the sender, who apparently complained and got a second sent, very similar to the first. Deceptive photo, this item needs a strong disclaimer against use as a gift.
Lou from Lou’s Bonsai is true to his word – he will give his cell phone and make sure everything arrived in order and answer any questions – no matter how small one thinks it may be. I rate Lou’s Bonsai a 10.
I received this tree this week. I have purchased Bonsai trees from other online vendors, but none have compared to this starting with the packing of the tree, you could tell it was packed with great care, it arrived in perfect shape. The tree is healthy and beautiful, far more beautiful than the picture shown on Amazon. The tree has a wonderful aroma, it smells like your in a forest, on a fall morning.
I could tell it was healthy immediately. Sometimes when you order things on line your disappointed, but not enough to go through the trouble of sending the item back. The minute I saw this tree I had wished I had ordered more. I will order other items from this company, I hope they are as fine as this purchase was.Brussel’s Dawn Redwood Outdoor Bonsai Tree
Back in March I ordered four dawn redwoods from a nursery on Ebay, all about 2-3 feet tall. They arrived bareroot and healthy. The plan was to plant three in the ground to replace trees uprooted by Katrina. The fourth was to go into a pot to be trained as bonsai. All four trees were thriving, but the one in the pot looked like a plant that yearned to join the rest of its family out in the yard, rather than being forested with my bonsai collection. Clearly, it was going to take time, patience, and training to get it to look like a bonsai. I decided to put it in the ground and order a Brussels Dawn Redwood.
And I’m glad I did. The Brussels tree is a long way from a specimen, but it already looks like a bonsai, a mature-looking but minature redwood with beatuiful tapered trunk and gorgeous lower branching, all of which was lacking in the nursery tree, which had arrived pruned to favor topgrowth. The Brussels Dawn redwood is absolutely stunning, far superior to the tree pictured on Amazon.
Sure, the nursery tree would have acquired this look–eventually, and after much training. But it loves growing with its kinfolk in the yard, and meanwhile I have this beautifully shaped little tree from Brussels to marvel at every time I sit outside with my bonsai collection. Frankly, I can’t take my eyes off it.
I’m neither impatient by nature nor a champion of acting on impulse. But there are times when instant gratification and acting on impulse has its rewards, and this was one of them. The Brussels Dawn Redwood looks like a tree, not a seedling. It is nothing short of breathtaking.
We bought a package deal- a redwood and a grove. They were shipped quickly and arrived healthy. My sister and her husband appreciate the fact the bonsai can live outside their small home in the California foothills.
I bought this from Amazon (not the seller depicted currently). The plant looked great on arrival, but it died with 15 days, despite trying very hard and following all instructions. I wonder if shipping in a box (and depriving light, etc for 2-4 days) causes such damage.

I received my Dawn Redwood a couple of days ago. I don’t think I got the same impression as others when I first saw my tree. I ordered it early in the year so I am assuming it is just now starting to get its leaves for the spring. My wife’s first impression was that it looked like Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree.
I love the bark on this tree and how it makes it look older. The trunk of the tree and taper is probably about average. From soil to the top of the tree it is 21 inches tall. The color of the bark and the color of the leaves is really beautiful. I am anxious for it to fill out.
Overall it looks like it has some potential for a nice tree.

I received my Dawn Redwood today. It looks wonderful. I was initially nervous about purchasing more plants online because I have had bad experiences from nurseries. But I read the reviews on this particular tree and they convinced me to try again. The tree arrived in great shape. It actually only spent about 3 days in the box. It was well packed it looks very healthy and the soil was still damp on arrival.
Thanks you for the care that was taken in selecting, packing and shipping my tree. I would have no hesitation in recommending you to others.
I was reluctant to buy one after reading the negative reviews but I was also encouraged by the positive ones. I’m glad I decided to take the chance! I had it mailed directly to my Mother as a gift. Like the other reviews say, it arrived quickly and was packaged extremely well. Not a single branch was damaged and the pot also made the trip in perfect condition. Given the fact that this is February, I expected it to arrive baren of any foliage. It actually is so healthy it’s full of little green buds. The branches are pruned to give the tree a very nice shape, and the soil (according to my Mom) is the correct type of soil it SHOULD be in and not just some temporary crud made to last only as long as the shipping time. Thank you for making my gift a nice one. My Mom really loves it.
I received my Dawn Redwood Bonsai yesterday, and I was impressed on how big it was. From the base of the plant to the top it stands at about 24″. The plant arrived unharmed from the packaging and was very healthy looking. From the packaging to the saran wrap over the soil to hold in the moisture, you can tell someone took great care in packaging this plant before sending it and I couldn’t be happier. Now we will see if I can keep it alive 🙂

horrific! It looked like they had just found a twig and loped off the top! And that was just for starters. It was sent in the middle of winter (a Christmas gift from my mom and dad I might add)But it was still hadn’t droped it’s leaves. It was poorly potted, like they were going for a root over rock style with out the rock.the top was cut off and it had 2 leading shoots. Needeles to say it it held on to it’s needles all winter and never really went through a dormant peroied. It finaly droped it’s dry as bones leaves near the end of winter but then spring came and it strugled and tried to bud out but failed and is dead very dead…I checked. This was the worst attempt at a bonsai I have ever seen, for this type of tree I could not think of a worse specimen then the one this company (and I use the term companay loosly) sent me. Stay away form this company! If could give a less then one star rating I would!!!

The tree is very ugly… was not cut in away to look like a little tree.. the tree is huge which is nice but has a very very ugly top.. looks like some one potted a bush.. Cheap to buy but nothing like a bonsai. Looks like my 4 year old made this. Sad this was a present. 🙁
Tree is totally brown and appears dead…trimmed quite funky. I can only hope it may sprout something in the spring.
The first tree I got, it wasn’t looking like a tree, more like a branch. I contacted the seller, and ask to send me similar to the one from the amazon picture, is it so difficult?! New tree arrived few days ago, much large, older, but it looks like they chapped off the top of the tree just to fit in the box, nice tree trunk and the pot,but the top of the tree is a total disaster. So,if you diecide to buy it from this seller, make sure you state exactly what you want. Seller responds very quickly and quite care for the customers and business.

I recieved this product from lou’s bonsai and it was such a disapointment. First off when opening the box the pot was in pieces. I can understand that this happens, but the plant was in horrible condition. It looked like nothing in the picture. I understand that this was not the same tree but it was apparent that the grower just lopped off the top of the tree and grew it like a plant. It looks horrible. My roommate was against me displaying it in our living room because of the crappy look it has. I was so disapointed I am an avid collector of bonsai trees and it will take years for this bush to look like a tree again. I contacted lou who told me he was going to reship but that never happened. DO NOT BUY FROM LOU’S BONSAI. They totally ruined everything about this transaction
The tree was well packaged and came watered. I will say it was younger then what the picture showed.*updat
I unpacked it and put in indirect sunlight and watered as suggested. All was going well but three weeks later it was dead.
Tree traveled from across the country and I am not sure how long it was in the box as it was a gift. But I will say I am not sure this was a factor.
Amazon wise I have one good tree still going and one dead tree……
Well now. I didn’t dispose of the tree and found a new limb sprout. Will update as I try to recover this tree.
Initially purchased this plant about a month and a half ago, it looked nice but the pot was broken, I emailed Lou and a new they shipped a new plant along with a new pot! Great great customer service from Lous Bonsai, I just wish UPS handled the packages better, because both pots were broken again.

THIS PRODUCT ARRIVE VERY QUICKLY AND WELL PACKED. THEY DID A OUTSTANDING JOB. RECEIVED 2 DAYS AFTER PURCHASING. TREE ARRIVED STILL MOIST AND VERY GREEN. WAS SOME LIGHT COLOR ON SOME OF THE LEAVES BUT THAT IS EXPECTED FROM THE STRESS OF SHIPPING. PLACED IN SHADE FOR A FEW DAYS AND GAVE IT A GOOD MIST EVERY DAY ON THE LEAVE AND KEPT OUT OF DIRECT SUN LIGHT AND ALL LEAVES HAVE GAINED FULL COLOR AGAIN. ANOTHER THING IS IT LOOKED LIKE IT HAD BEEN A WHILE SINCE LAST PRUNE JOB. SO I WAS ABLE TO PRUNE TO MY LIKING. ALSO THE POT IS AWESOME. I FEEL LIKE I BOUGHT A NICE POT AND GOT A TREE FOR FREE. RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT TO ANYONE! JUST MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THE ARRIVAL INSTRUCTIONS ON THE PRODUCT PAGE ON AMAZON UNDER SHIPPING NO INSTRUCTIONS COME WITH THE TREE IN THE PACKAGE EVERYTHING IS ON THE SAME PAGE AS THE PRODUCT RIGHT BELOW IT. HOPE THIS HELPS SOME ONE OUT.
Arrived very well packed and no damage. Came in earily April and was lush and green. Slightly different pot than on the site, but I acutally like the one I got better. I have had it over a week and nothing has shown any signs of dieing at all. I would definatly buy from Brussels again.
not sure what to say just yet .the tree wasn’t what i had expected it looked like they put a stick in the pot hacked it a little and sent it on its way . after 4 days the leaves all turned brown and limp . i am hopeing it is just a phase but i will wait it out and see. i have ordered many trees on amazon and all were great i just hope this one turns aroun
Taking one of the world’s largest trees and turning it into a small wonder for anyone with even a balcony is truly a wonder, but Dawn Redwood does make a fascinating bonsai subject with it’s delicate foliage turning Autumn yellow/brown and regrowing bright green in Spring. Mine arrived even better looking than the photo, with a larger trunk base which tapered nicely to the top. The soil surface was covered with fine, bright green moss while the tree was in its dormant state for December delivery. Brussel’s has been reliable over the years and getting free shipping via my Amazon Prime membership is an extra bonus. Whether the tree lives or dies is now my responsibility and will require daily watering and continual pruning, but I’ve been doing this for some years now. Be prepared for a very large box filled with peanuts but that serves to secure the tree as well as insulate it during shipping.
Soooooo upset by this order. Ordered this as a christmas gift for my brother-in-law who LOVES the redwoods. When it arrived, it was deader than dead. It was the saddest looking stump I have ever seen in my life. Charlie Brown’s Christmas Tree looks lush and full by comparison. Never have I been so upset by a purchase through Amazon.
Good size but the most primitive pruning.I would have preferred that they hadn’t pruned it at all and just left it for me to do. Really bad job for a bonsai.
When I received this bonsai, it was well-packaged but very brittle and dry. I unwrapped the packaging and watered it. I did notice some spider mites in the soil but I don’t know how to get rid of those.
Also, I had to remove some brittle branches and within 3 weeks it finally green some new ones and very nice green leaves. But about a month later it quickly dried up and it seems to be dry again. I did water regularly and gave it plenty of sunlight (without ever burning the leaves). I will try to revive the tree again and will update this review in a month.
The tree was well packaged and came quickly, but was dead. I would have liked some written instructions about the tree rather than a recommendation to call the seller. I was also not sure whether the tree was dormant and was perhaps supposed to look the way it does (in December.) I’m still hoping it may revive, so I’m hanging on to it. It was intended as a gift to celebrate a marriage, but I couldn’t give a dead looking tree in that circumstance.
So i don’t normally give product reviews on Amazon, even though i tend to buy a lot of stuff here, in fact this is the first time. I’ve wanted a redwood bonsai for awhile and was a little skeptical about what i would get at this price through an online vendor. Boy was I in for a treat. This is by far the best deal ive received for a bonsai. Coming in at about 30 inches and meticulously packaged, this was much more than I expected. Heck, the huge ceramic pot it comes with could easily set you back $15-20 at some places, not to mention beautifully accented with moss. Really content!
Received the Dawn Redwood quickly and very well packed, tree was in perfect health. I truly wonder how they ship that nicely, half way across the country at this low price. Nice nearly 2 inch diameter root base, with one root crossing the trunk (easily fixed.) Many branches allowing one to determine the style they would like out of this nice tree. At the sale price this is an extraordinary buy, the pot and shipping alone would cost more. But even at it’s full retail, you will not likely find a better deal anywhere. This is not a completed bonsai (are they ever complete?) But an excellent starter tree that in a year or two will look spectacular. After two months I already get many compliments on it’s beauty and potential. There are three more on the way right now, I think I can make a fantastic forest planting, at a very low price.
