Maybe I had my expectations set too high after reading the other reviewers. This is nothing like homemade beef broth. Yes, it’s better than bullion, and it avoids the “tinny” taste that canned broths tend to have. However, it still has a hard-to-describe strange flavor, not the rich beefy taste others described. Plus, it’s very very salty. It’s hard to make a good sauce or soup from it because of the amount of salt.
Each pouch, which reconstitutes to one cup, has 770 mg of sodium. That’s higher than most canned broths. I assume that high salt content is to make up for the lack of beef. I don’t know how much they use, but the USDA requires less than an ounce of beef for every gallon of water – I don’t think they’re much higher than that. If you try to concentrate it into a sauce or gravy, it becomes as salty as cheap buffet food.
It’s not terrible, but it’s nothing like the quality of a good boxed chicken broth. I’m certainly not going to reorder it once I run out; I’d rather just avoid recipes that require beef broth.
Savory Choice is the best stock I’ve found and I love everything about it. First off, it’s flavor is incomparable to any other pre-made stock product and it really tastes like what chicken stock is supposed to taste like. I shared it with my grandmother and it won even *her* stamp of approval. Secondly, I love that it is concentrated so that you make up just the amount you need, which is especially handy when you are deglazing a pan to make a sauce, for example; you don’t end up with a whole quart container going bad in your fridge. Finally, if there’s anything I learned from NY apt. living, I love how small the footprint is of the box, itself. It’s also great to pack for backpacking trips, to keep in your desk at work, etc.
They make chicken, beef, and turkey and around the Bay Area, it’s available at Whole Foods, Berkeley Bowl, Andronico’s, etc.

I’ve used this Savory Choice product for over a year and can recommend it highly. It is delicious and easy. Inside each individual packet is a thick liquid: just add it to a cup of water to make the broth. This is not like the low-salt, low-fat powders or the canned products but more like broth you’ve cooked from scratch. Comes in beef, chicken, and turkey flavors. I keep it handy on my RV as well as in my kitchen.
Update 2010: I’m still ordering and using the chicken broth and the beef broth as staples in my pantry and on the RV. I’ve given packets away to friends so they can enjoy these excellent products. While cooking, you can squeeze the packet into your food and add the cup of water, then stir. Easy and a big saving in shelf space over cans.
This broth tastes just like roast beef; rich, delicious and full of flavor. Some may think it’s a little salty so taste your food before seasoning with extra salt. I’m definitely going to buy more because it is so easy to turn into broth and takes up much less cupboard space than the boxes of stocks. Excellent product.
My previous experiences with beef broth are the granular stuff and the canned liquid in the grocery stores. I didn’t like the flavor of the granular, and I hated opening a can of broth when I only needed a little. So, I rarely used beef broth, I just avoided it.
I took a chance on ordering Savory Choice Beef Broth Concentrate because my beef stew needed “something”, and I haven’t regretted it. For the first time ever, I’m adding beef broth to everything… I just know it’s going to come out good. I add it to my beef stew, my husband added it to his sirloin ‘n’ portobello mushroom soup. We both love the savory flavor it adds. I particularly like that I can add more flavor per amount of liquid if I choose by adding extra packets. And, super easy to store compared to cans. I love this stuff.
real stock! salt isn’t the number one ingredient. We use it as a marinate starter for roast beef and steaks…
My husband is very allergic to soy proteins and any kind of corn product. This is the ONLY beef bullion product I can use because of ingredients – but it would still be the only thing I use now because of the TASTE!
yup, they’ve figured it out. we love their product and now they want more money for it. of course. i sauteed some onions and mushrooms in olive oil and used a couple packets but added no water since the shrooms and onions have plenty. mmmmmm good. i did not taste the tinny effect others have mentioned. i then poured that mixture over some brown and wild rice. oh wow. i sure can cook good. i am imagining the dishes i will make using this product. have also used the vegetable and like. the chicken packets are on the way.
I used to like using powdered bullion broth, but these packets are much more authentic. The first time I had it, I was convinced it was homemade and was shocked to find out that it actually was from a package! It has real beef flavor and is just as convenient with its individual packets.
Finally! A GREAT tasting product that does not contain MSG and is Gluten Free! Since when did the foods we eat, all become science experiments! Thank you Savory Choice for making a great and very handy product. Not only is it great, but it’s easy to store. Got the Turkey, Vegetable, Beef, Chicken and the Demi Glace. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
I very often will make broth concentrate by boiling down the low-sodium canned broth until I have something like a roumelade. All the bullions I’ve tried, including the Penzey’s weird soup base paste stuff, taste mostly like MSG and salt, not beef. The Savory Choice product is superb–for something that comes out of a plastic envelope I have no complaints.
Use this to crank up the beef flavor in, say, stroganoff, shredded round steak for burrito filling, chili, pot roast, etc.
Personally I wish they would leave the salt completely out of it–the high salt content _to me_ is just another variable I’d rather not have to keep track of. You aren’t going to be buying this if you aren’t pretty adept in the kitchen, and if you are adept you know how to salt your dishes. I don’t want to cook with pre-salted hamburger or pre-salted carrots, and I don’t want the bullion trying to guess my preferences either.
But that is a quibble really, I love this product!
Excellent beef product. I love the single packets this makes at easy to keep it safe and store it at room temp.
By far the best of the bunch. I agree wholeheartedly with fellow reviewers who gave it high praises. I gave it 4 instead of 5 because it seems the amount you get out of each individual package (quite a nice touch to have it in single well protected packages) is really not enough and I end up using a few of these packages for each creation, so one can only sigh as each individual box containing, I think (therefore I am), ten individual packages are gone faster than you can say “Where is the Beef?!”. Besides that reflection of how much of a “tight-wad” I can be I must say this product is a lot tastier than most out there waiting in the aisles. The fact that the Broth is a thick gooey concentrate of beef only adds to my pleasure. Smells like what it claims and that is one more plus. I have been able to use them quite successfully in several ways: Stews, Soups, Sauces, on top of quality beef while cooking at high heat (stir fry renderings, per say). I have tried the cubes, the glass containers (above the cubes in quality, that is for sure), the powder form (or was that chicken, I am getting dizzy…) and I like this product. To test it I boiled a cup of water or so, added one of the packages (a little later another one), some herbs that go well with this kind of broth, a touch of fresh salsa and drank it like a cup of soup. No complaints. One package is rarely enough but the flavor and the final results all point out to an above average offering. Wish it was more quantity (then again if wishes were horses beggars would be riding) and now that I know about Savory Choice Beef Broth Concentrate, 5.1-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 4) I am going to buy more and I should say I have purchased a similar product in the past but not as gooey, a little more solid and comes in a plastic container and makes about a gallon of liquid, from a place where I buy the best Seafood Bases I have found in this great country. I know how important bases are to really be able to put out a superior tasting dish so is added on the food budget and this product does not disappoint. 4 Stars!
I love this liquid beef broth concentrate! It is handy to have if you are sick and need nourishment; or,,,,what I use it most for is to add flavor to other foods. Left over meat? use 1 or 2 packet(s) with 1(2) cup(s) water and heat the meat up and make gravy with the juice. I will often use the beef broth with chicken for a unique flavor. I add it to quinoa for beef flavoring. We don’t often use rice; but, it surely could be used for rice dishes as well. I have a decent stock of this….easy for hubby to use too; and he did when he was making meals for me after a recent surgery…
this product is great. it is so easy to use. it disolves instantly. no chasing a cube around in a cup of water! the little packets take little storage space and it is great to take camping or in a luchbox for a hot cup of broth on a cold winter day.
Almost hate to review as they may run out again. I’ve gotten several friends using it too. Adds great flavor to anything you use. Chicken also great
EXCELLENT, excellent product. Need some flavor for you soup or gravy? add this item. Easy to use and very tasty.
We were looking for a product with great flavor and no MSG and found it in this item. Our entire family likes it.
My local Whole Foods has been out of this for ages so I looked on Amazon. The price is great (it goes for $6.99 an individual box at Whole Foods). I make lots of homemade soups and stew and this is by far the best broth I’ve tried including Penzey’s which was my previous favorite.
